Default Simple Commands
Old 03-05-2007, 10:05 PM   #1 (permalink)

Mitsy learned sit and down fast. She'll almost always do it if there's a treat involved, but if it's just a verbal commands, she's pretty iffy.

Anybody got a good way to get her off the treats?

Hi,

I'm Rae and my little guy is Koda. I have to say your one step ahead of me if you can get Mitsy to lay down. Koda is 7 months and will sit, stay, come when called even when of the lead but lay....no way...LOL

With the treats what I did was to start giving treats at intervals..he'd get one then the next time he wouldn't instead he'd get lots of praise and so on. Then after a week I made it that he got a treat the first time then not the next two times..and so on. Now it's very rare that he looks for a treat.

Hope this helps

Our boy Jackson learned sit, lay, shake and is currently learning to roll over and he's only 4 months old. We've slowly been weening him off treats. Like Rae said, just give him praise instead of a treat every once in a while, then move it to praise half the time, then praise most of the time. Eventually your dog will learn to not expect a treat, but praise instead. This is what was told to me by a dog trainer at the local pet store. We've been slowly doing this and it's definitely showing improvements.

fausto is 14 months and nows the basic commands. with laying down the treats didn't work. he refused to lay on the grass. within the house he does everything. i found out that the toy he loves he will do anything for. so when i show it he lays down. i throw the toy immidiatly. when he has the hang of it i delay the time when i throw the toy. he now does it on command. but he can be soooooooooooooo stubbern! i was training him the otherday and i was teaching him to stay. i hadden't done this before and he stayed in the sit command for a whole minute! he proved again how intelligent he is again!
