Question What is the best way to house train Shae
Old 08-12-2007, 07:10 PM   #1 (permalink)

I am beating my head against the wall on this one. Shae is our new baby. My husband wasn't at all impressed at first about a house dog. We got her two weeks ago. She now 11 weeks old. I bought her the science diet puppy food to make sure she got all the nutritient she needed. I put her in a crate at night when we go to bed and when I first get up I take her outside to go to the bathroom. Same place everytime and she goes. Then I feed her and water her and wait about 20 minutes and take her again. Most of the time she will go and sometimes I will stay out there an hour and she won't go and soon as I get back in the house she goes. Then I try to take her out every hour and most the time its the same she waits until we get back in. So I started scolding her when I would see her starting to use the bathroom in the house and she has been peeing then hiding from me. I didn't yell loud. She loves to lay on a quilt on our leather couch. So this morning while I was out of the room she went to the other end of the couch an pooed. OMG my husband paniced. I laughed at him and cleaned it up. Then later today I was cuddling up with her on the couch watching t.v. and my nephew came in and I was sitting there talking to him and Shae took up on the couch and peed...HELP....what am I doing wrong?

please never scould your puppy when she has an accident. this will damage your relationship with your pup and will teach her not to go when your around.
you need to know that a pup needs to go after eating, drinking, sleaping, playing. you must take her out immidiateley. don't wait minutes because she won't be able to contain het bladder.
wait until she has done something and praise her! give a command like go potty and after a while she wil go on command.
if she goes inside and you catch her pick her up don't say anything and put her outside and wait until she goes.
clean the area where she's peed with washing detergent. this wil neutrelize the odour and will stop her returning to that place to releave herself. if you do this consequentley she should be house broken within weeks.
at night don't feed her or let her drink after 6 oclock. let her out just before you go to bed and after about 6 hours set the alarm clock and let her out.
when she has the hang of it you can build the time out to every hour and increase the time with a quarter of an hour.
work with praise and treats not with scoulding!

success!

11 weeks old,no problem.. we purchased a cage, big enough for trish for when she's an adult,we keep it next to our bed,we keep her in the cage when no ones home, and at night, she does not have the run of the house when were sleeping, they put up a fuss for around a week, then they depend on the cage, they will not use the bathroom in the cage, unless they cannot hold it anymore, when a young pup, take out of cage every 2 hours to pee,do not let them walk to door, carry them and place them outside or on paper, whichever you want to train them to use, after around 3 weeks, trish has learned to whine when she needed to go out(when shes in her cage),starting low and getting louder if you don't respond, trish is now 3 years old and when its time for bed,she will go to the cage herself,we go behind her to shut the door. she is a very happy boston and loves her cage, sometimes when she wants to nap,she goes into it to have her nap.of course its lined with a pillow and her own disney blanket.of course we have a doggie door and she uses it now,we only have to let her out of her cage when she whines at night, and she uses the doggie door, she has the run of the house during the day and of course, she uses the doggie door on her own., never uses the house for a bathroom, the cage is the way to go to potty train.. //this has also worked for sister inlaws dog,not a boston..they will love the cage after potty training...

wow, a 3 year old boston that is locked in her crate at night? How about everyone else?
We only locked the crate the first 3 months. We have been wanting to let him roam the house (he's currently locked in kitchen) during the night but just scratches our door.

Other people told me that he will behave better if we let him sleep in our room, but we would rather him be outside the room.

I'd love to here how everyone else has their bostons sleeping arrangement set up.

my bt slept locked in his crate until about 12 months. after that he slept in the living room on his chair (where his bed stands on). he is now operated on and stays in his crate 24 hours a day for 6 weeks. he has no problems with this seen the fact that he is used to the crate!
