Question Skin care on Boston Terrier's - 08-20-2007, 12:06 PM

This is my first BT. Shae is now 12 weeks and i've had her for 1 month. What i'm wondering is she gets these little bumps on her head that when you scatch across flake off like dry skin. My husband thinks they are flea bites but we have had the flea medicine put on her at the vet that last for a month and it has only been a couple weeks. We have never saw a flea on her either. Someone told me that these dogs have really dry skin. Could this be what it is and what can I do about it...?

Our male boston also seems to get the really dry patches, some almost layered like bumps, so it sounds similar to what you described. He definitely doesn't have fleas, so i have always just assumed dry skin, possibly an allergy to something.
Are bathing her? Just be aware some shampoos can be really harsh, so i try to use stuff that is more natural with conditioning ingredients. I have one that has oatmeal and that seems to help.

the belgian sheppard of my parents had what dry skin. here in holland you can get small blocks of sheep fat that you can feed the dog. this is wonderful for the dogs skin and coat. also one teaspoon of corn oil is excellent for their skin. if you can't get these ingredients you can give the dog a teaspoon of fish oil that comes from sardines. give these ingredients daily and you wil see a big change in your dogs skin and coat!

I give my Bostons a can of tuna (in oil, drained) once a month and they haven't had any dry skin since I started. Plus they love it.

My dog also had this issue and it ended up being a food allergy. We switched her food to Lamb and Rice and she cleared up within a week and is now very shiny. I also bathe her with this shampoo called Earth Bath which has tea tree oil in it. It prevents dandruff and dryness. You could try either of these and see if it improves. Good luck!

Try Dream Coat by Halo. They advertise 'grooming your dog from the inside out.' I saw a BT at the feed store yesterday with a young lady and that dog's coat looked like it was about to drip, it was so shiny. I asked her why that coat was so vibrant and she promptly said it was not so much what she fed her but Dream Coat gets the credit. She also stated that prior ro using the product her Boston had extrememly dry skin. I was through shopping but went back in and purchased a small (8oz) bottle. Wish you could have seen her. If you don't have a local supplier they have a web site.
