Question Skin care on Boston Terrier's - 08-20-2007, 12:06 PM

This is my first BT. Shae is now 12 weeks and i've had her for 1 month. What i'm wondering is she gets these little bumps on her head that when you scatch across flake off like dry skin. My husband thinks they are flea bites but we have had the flea medicine put on her at the vet that last for a month and it has only been a couple weeks. We have never saw a flea on her either. Someone told me that these dogs have really dry skin. Could this be what it is and what can I do about it...?

Our male boston also seems to get the really dry patches, some almost layered like bumps, so it sounds similar to what you described. He definitely doesn't have fleas, so i have always just assumed dry skin, possibly an allergy to something.
Are bathing her? Just be aware some shampoos can be really harsh, so i try to use stuff that is more natural with conditioning ingredients. I have one that has oatmeal and that seems to help.

the belgian sheppard of my parents had what dry skin. here in holland you can get small blocks of sheep fat that you can feed the dog. this is wonderful for the dogs skin and coat. also one teaspoon of corn oil is excellent for their skin. if you can't get these ingredients you can give the dog a teaspoon of fish oil that comes from sardines. give these ingredients daily and you wil see a big change in your dogs skin and coat!

I give my Bostons a can of tuna (in oil, drained) once a month and they haven't had any dry skin since I started. Plus they love it.

My dog also had this issue and it ended up being a food allergy. We switched her food to Lamb and Rice and she cleared up within a week and is now very shiny. I also bathe her with this shampoo called Earth Bath which has tea tree oil in it. It prevents dandruff and dryness. You could try either of these and see if it improves. Good luck!

Try Dream Coat by Halo. They advertise 'grooming your dog from the inside out.' I saw a BT at the feed store yesterday with a young lady and that dog's coat looked like it was about to drip, it was so shiny. I asked her why that coat was so vibrant and she promptly said it was not so much what she fed her but Dream Coat gets the credit. She also stated that prior ro using the product her Boston had extrememly dry skin. I was through shopping but went back in and purchased a small (8oz) bottle. Wish you could have seen her. If you don't have a local supplier they have a web site.

Default Could It Be... - 09-14-2008, 12:57 PM

Oh my, what is that pinkish growth all over her? Is that related to the skin issue? You should get her to a vet and have that awful looking pink stuff removed...OK....just kidding (but I'll bet your lil' doggie wants to know what on earth she could do to please you so that you would consider stoping the abuse of dressing her in that insulting outfit)...OK just kidding again....seriously, if she can eat them...eggs are a great coat enhancer. Good luck! And I am just kidding about the outfit. It looks great!!

Here are some things:

Shampoo: If you bath your Boston make sure that you either have shampoo from your vet for their skin or try to but good quality OATMEAL shampoo. Dream coat has good products.

Food: high quality dog foods will always help get you a good coat and skin condition. If this is not enough Tuna in olive oil and eggs will help improve the dog's skin and coat. Always be care full with eggs, if you are not comfortable with feeding a raw egg, it is perfectly safe to serve them over easy or scrambled as long as you cook them slowly and on a low temperature. Remember never to feed an animal Tuna from a can, the chemicals they use to coat the insides of the cans is toxic to dogs and cats (OK if you are feeding one can per month). If you are feeding a dog tuna more than once a month buy it in the pouches.

Also, there are nice therapy diets that you can get from your vet. They are prescription diets from premium companies like Science Diet and Waltham/Royal Canine, (there is another one that is really good, it is natural and organic but I forget the name). Especially formulated to get a balanced nutrition + improve skin and coat condition.

Be careful of vets that have "contracts" with food companies they will recommend something from that brand insted of recmmending what they think is best for your pet. I know it sounds weird but Banfield, the pet hosptial in Petsmart would be a good place to go since they "choose" the food they recommend, they are not "TOLD" via a contract what to presribe.
