Red face Puppy don't listen..
Old 08-28-2007, 04:29 PM   #1 (permalink)

Just wondering if its normal for my puppy to not respond to me when I call her. We will go outside and i'll call her to come to me and acts like she don't hear me. I have caught her looking off and clapped my hands behind her and she hears good. I think she does it on purpose. How can I get her to stop doing this? She is now 13 weeks old.

Your puppy is normal. None of them really listen at that age in my experience. They don't understand you. With time and training, they will learn!

Tip for training Shae to come when you call...

Always carry a plastic baggy of little treats.

Sometime when you notice that Shae is just a little ways away from you and not distracted by something else (toy, other people, etc.) pull out a treat (don't let her see it), call her, and then reward her with a treat and a little bit of praise when she responds appropriately.

Just keep the baggy with you for a few weeks and work on it with her. Eventually, you can start weaning off of using the treats as a reward, and simply give her a little praise.

I agree. When my BT's were little it took them a little while to come to me too. Treats are a grreat way of getting them to come to you. When you call your puppy...call her by name and say...want a treat. And when the pup comes give a treat and praise. Don't ever yell at them when they finally do come. Now that my bostons are grown...all I have to do is say their name and treat....and they come running. Works like a charm. good luck

For me the easiest way to train my BT was to use her favorite treats. I have learned that Bostons will do almost anything for a treat. My little one is tougher because he doesnt like beef treats.

Mine is 14 wks and is the same. I did get a clicker and click with a piece of food and it works wonders. She sits right away and focus's well. Outside, she may not listen as well but we are working on it. Click and treat!!
