Default suggestions for teaching tricks
Old 09-09-2007, 04:23 PM   #1 (permalink)

I'm working with Shae on doing tricks or commands. She sits really good on command and lays sometimes with a treat. Are there a certain way to teach them to lay and roll over? I mean like a hand motion or something? I've been on the floor going from a sitting to laying position and then rolling over to try to get Shae to do it. Shae sits with her head cocked side ways as to say what is this dummy doing and my husband is ready to call in the men in white with the straight jackets....

I haven't taught butters to roll over yet but here's how I would do it;

once he lays down on command and waits for a treat, waive the treat accross him so he rolls over with his eyes following the treat. Don't forget the give the "roll over" command. The rest is all repitition.

Let us know how it goes.

What butters said. But make sure u have lots of treats and LOTS of patience, it does take some time. I have taught my dogs tricks in about 20-30 minutes by continuously working with them

Patience and repetition! Rocky learned rollover the same way butters was explaining. It can really get frustrating sometimes, but be sure not to show ANY kind of negative reactions when teaching Shae. Training should always be fun and happy. Repetition is important, but don't teach it TOO long at one period of time because Shae might get bored.

fausto learns real quick. you think he doesn't get it and you turn your back and presto! i use a clicker to teach him. with this you can time your treat at a precise moment! works like a charm!
