Default Butter gettin in other dogs faces
Old 10-23-2007, 10:33 AM   #1 (permalink)

Hi everyone,

Butters is a nice/socialable dog but when he first meets dogs at the park or beach he doesn't sniff them, he gets in their face. It sometimes provokes reactions from the other dogs. He looks absolutely crazy to the other dog owners but he's just being playfull in his own ultra-hyper way.
He doesn't care how big the other dog is either. He was bit by a pitbull last month because he learned to calm down.

So anyone else have this problem?

my Duke does the dame.... Duke is 8.5 months old and when i walk him around the block i at times bump into a neighbor of mine with 3 large labs... we keep them apart until they all calm down, once thats done (about 5 min) we step closer... the 3 labs try and sniff Duke, but all he wants to do is jump on them... when he(duke) does that they show him that it's not acceptable by growling... and before they bite i give a good tug on his lead. and again this morning another neighbor walking his large Shepard went to sniff duke, and again all he wants to do is play by jumping in their faces... duke hasn't yet barked any anyone or any dog yet (thank God) but i feel that getting in other dog's faces as he's doing will get him in trouble one day...

next week i start his formal training. hopefully they can teach me how to fix this problem....

Good luck with Butter

never yank their lead when he's around other dogs. by doing this you cause tension with the dog. he is tens when he meets another dog and then the leader corrects him. if you continue this behavior you may cause agression with your dog. its better to go to neutral ground and let the dogs see eachother off the leads. the end of your lead is the end of his territory which may cause him to want to defend it. then you give a tug whichcauses more negative sensation!

The only reason why i gave a quick tug on his lead was the dog that he was playing with or trying to has bitten other dogs in the block. I didn't want my duke to be the next victim. Duke's great with other dogs and cats. Usually when my other neighbor brings their jack russels and a pit bull we let them play together w/ out any problems...

there's about 3 dogs w/ in our neighborhood that have been known to bite other dogs... and one of the guys in the block have told me which area to avoid... I haven't yet met a BT that has been aggressive towards other dogs or people... Just glad that I'm lucky to have a very passive and calm one...

I do agree with what you say about having dogs meet on neutral grounds and have them sniff each other out for a few min before letting the lead off. I was told to do that by a friend of my brother who's on animal planet as a dog trainer....

thats good.i've also been a dog trainer for 10 years. i've done about all dogsports and training. from police dog training to rescue dogsand everything in between.
i think it's great that a forum exists so that people can learn from each other. there are so many dogs that don't get a good upbringing and endup in a pound or rescue centre. the dog is always the victim

I'm also very pleased to know of this forum to help me in my upbringing of my Duke... Tomorrow we start his formal training with a Trainer... already he know's sit, wait, down, and a little bit of stay... so hopefully this trainer can help me reinforce these so he'll listen at all times... cross fingers..

have a wonderful day everyone
