Default Gets WAYYYYYY too excited!!!

My little one love people and other dogs- I think it is great because I want her to be well socialized, but some times it makes it hard!

Last night I took Nuggies out to poo after dinner. Unfortunately, there were about 8 kids that were playing in the dog area at my apartment complex. Not only were they there, but they were loud. My dog got all excited and I couldn't get her to poo- she just kept trying to work her way over to the kids. She wouldn't even sniff around! This is the only area in my part of the complex that I can take her out to poo, so it was annoying that there were all of these kids there- and why were they playing in the area where all of the dogs poo??? The kids were even rolling around in the grass and there was a fat girl there that must have been 15- she should have known better!

I know my little one is still a puppy and is still excited about people, but I wish she would be a little bit calmer and focus on the task at hand- I got really mad about those kids!!!

What kind of training have you done with her? If you can get her attention from the kids by having her focus on you it might help.

She's just a puppy, it's very hard for her to focus. Plus, she's a Boston and Bostons love people. Hearing these kids play and not be able to go see them must be torture for her.

In general, dogs are better at doing their business in quiet environments, let alone a puppy.

This is totally expected behavior. You'll just have to find somewhere else to go. Don't forget you don't want her to get used to doing her business in just one place, because then you'll have a big problem on your hands !

Work on the "Leave it" command. I live in a townhouse with my three pups and there are lots of kids around in the "common area". If you can get her to master leave it, she will "ignore" and go about her business. If all else fails, take her on a walk around the block.

My thoughts exactly. Even if I could have gotten Boo to focus on me I still would have walked her somewhere else to do her business. She likes a little privacy for number two.

Default Fat Girls Should Know Better
Old 09-14-2008, 12:50 PM   #8 (permalink)

Wow, I can't believe that the kids were rolling around in poo. And a 15 year old fat girl, too? If she were thin, I could understand it, but a fattie? No excuse.

Here's a suggestion. Kids are like puppies (well, they are puppies, HUMAN puppies) so don't try to figure them out. Tell their parents that their kids are rolling around in raw sewage that will make them really sick, or you may want to walk your dog elsewhere.

Also, why do you feel that the weight of the girl was an important addendum to your story? Who cares that she was fat?

I would recommend taking the dog on a walk after dinner. I would bet that if you took a stroll around the block with her, she'd sniff around and do her business.

You might also try just getting in between her and the kids or distraction. Cause her to focus on you instead of them. Then you're in a better position to give her commands.

I would still recommend giving her a walk before trying to prompt her to go to the bathroom though...

Good luck! :D
