Default snarling and trying to bite
Old 09-02-2008, 10:56 AM   #1 (permalink)

our ten month puppy Bruno is snarling and trying to bite at us when we are trying to correct him or trying to get him to do something that he does not like...How do we go about trying to correct this, I have tried the "no" and the time out but he really does not care, he tests me every chance he gets, I am getting really discouraged..I cannot take him to training for another two weeks due to shots, so any good sound advice would be greatly appreciated.

What types of things are you trying to do that he doesn't like?

I'd suggest you start training him at home as much as you can before he can go to "school", I dont know whether you use clicker training where you are but we use it lot of here in England. It's positive reinforcement methods. When he does what you've asked you "click" and then give him a small food reward. Once he's started to learn you can start to introduce the things he doesnt like so much and while he's being good (before he snarls or anything) you tell him good boy "click" and give him a reward (food or even a game with a toy).

Try not to force him to do something he really hates if you can! Obviously the only way he can tell you he doesnt like it is by growling etc!

I hope I've helped!

You might want to google "bite inhibition" and also, "NILIF" or Nothing in life is free. These are tried and true methods of training to first establish you as leader (pups do not bite the leader) and also use the inhibition that puppies learn during the important time of socialization where they learn that biting hurts and they must learn control of their urge to mouth or bite from their littermates and Mom. This happens at a crucial time in the pups development that unfortuantely most puppies do not have this time with their litter. pups that go to their new homes before they are 9-10 weeks old miss out on this, so you then become the teacher.
I use NILIF for both of my dogs still. They sit stay before they are allowed to go to the food bowl, and Libby runs through commands for five minutes before each meal, along with sit or down stay.
Good luck with training, would love to see pictures
