Default Biting/nipping
Old 10-02-2008, 01:20 PM   #1 (permalink)

My BT has a HUGE problem. When either my hubs, I, or anyone visiting our house tries to walk through the house, he grabs a hold of our legs and won't let go OR he bites onto our shoes and/or feet & tries to chew on them. This is a CONSTANT issue. Especially when we first get home from work or being out....

I've tried teaching him NOT to bite, by saying "OUCH!", telling him "NO!", etc. etc. every time he does. But, that seems to get him more riled up than anything. Any ideas on why he's doing this and how to get him to stop?! I feel like I've tried everything! Thanks!

What kind of things have you tried to keep him from doing this?

When he is most excitable (when you first get home), that's probably the least opportune time to try to teach him not to do it. Whatever type of training/corrections you do with him, you'll want to do them after he's had a good bit of exercise, and is in more of a calm state of mind.

With our pups, one of the best deterrents to behavior that we've found is a squirt from a water bottle. Again, you have to be careful with this though, as if the dog is not in the right frame of mind (i.e., if he's too excited), it can become a game - which is the last thing you want.

So, what kind of things have you tried to this point? Maybe some of the other members here can give you some useful training/correction methods

Mine has a similar problem, he likes to nip the ends of your fingers when you first get home. I would suggest teaching him some kind of command like leave it or off.

Rosco is super excited like that when we get home, but I make him lay down and calm himself before I pet him. He knows that when he is calm he will get attention. He doesnt nip but jumps up, and its been helping with him. He calms down within a few minutes of me getting home now.
