Question Best Training treats? Upset Tummy...
Old 06-16-2009, 02:08 PM   #1 (permalink)

So far I have had no luck with training treats for Minnie. It seemed that she was going back and forth with runny stools and finally...duh, I figured it out and it was the training treats I was giving her. I have tried a couple of different ones but all the same result. I read that you can use Cherrios but again that is a grain and I worry about it.

Any suggestions?

Have you tried just freeze-dried meats? I know our food store carries them--venison, salmon, chicken, etc. Or you can just cook up your own chicken breast and cube it for training. Here are some I found online: http://www.sitstay.com/dog/supplies/...&top_category=

Really, I just used what Truman would eat. Mostly all meat jerky type treats but I also found that regular chicken worked just fine, as did cubed up cheese or popcorn (he loves popcorn--I give it on occasion).

Also....i just used pieces of her food. She thought it was treats and kept the poop consistant.

Great idea....she is young enough to not catch on yet!!!

I will wait on the hot dogs for a bit till her tummy settles down.

I am in the process of going to a different food for her now. Nutro Puppy to Blue Buffalo Puppy. The people I got her from had her on it and she does well but reading everything about it we decided to change it. She ate the mixture fine today. I kind of want to stop Nutro completely right away but the transition period is important.

Again thank you both, Sue and Truman's Mom!

Yes, we use something similar. Don't know if it's called the same thing where you live but here it's called cabanossi. It's like a hotdog except with a stronger smell and taste. We cut it into really tiny pieces, (like the size of the smilies here on the right hand side) and use it for treats. So 1/3 of a hotdog goes far and isn't enough to cause any tummy upsets or spoil her appetite. It's the only thing that Olive will stop for, even when surrounded by lots of dogs in class and other distractions LOL

We use either his food, frozen turkey dogs, and we just started using these treats we got at the natural dog food store with salmon, lamb, and fruits in it, He loves those, we dice them up to the size of his kibble so they go a long way.

Badger has a very sensitive tummy but Coachies are brilliant and only 1 calorie each

Lemmy and Liberty,

I will try those suggestions. At Puppy class last night she did well with her own food as treats. Just like a child....it will take trial and error to find the right one for her. Funny how the stuff she picks up in the yard doesn't bother her tummy. Bugs, leaves....
