Default Dot on head
Old 01-25-2007, 08:01 PM   #1 (permalink)

Just curious, how many out there have a BT(s) with a dot/circle on the top of their head? I have one and more & more I have been seeing photos of other BT's with a dot on the top of their head. I just thought it was interesting.

Hmmm, that's funny you bring that up because Jake has a VERY faint spot right in the middle of his head and I've always wondered if it's going to get more pronounced as he gets older...

I have seen it many many times in Bostons. I wonder where it comes from? I have had lots with dots in my litters.

Here is a picture of my Dottie (her dot has actually blended into the rest of the black) & a litter of BT puppies. Everyone of the puppies has a dot on the middle of it's head.

MoJo has the dot, but it has started to blend with the left side of her head the older she is getting.

My female piper has a black dot on her forehead. The breeder that I got her from said that it was God's thumbprint. My little boy Rocky just has a white stripe on his head.[/i]

It is called a Haggerty spot or Haggerty thumbprint. It came from a Breeder many years ago named Haggerty

Thank you Bostonsrus for that info re: the Haggerty spot. I hadn't heard of that before.

here is more in depth info on the Haggerty spot:
One of the old founding lines of Bostons way back in the early 1900's was owned by the Haggertys. Many of their Bostons were born with the dot on the top of their heads, and the marking became associated with the line. Hence, when you see it, it is ofter referred to as a "Haggerty dot" or a "Haggerty star". Most lines cane be traced to Haggerty stock 'way back, and the dot pops out once in awhile in just about any of the present kennels. Vincent Perry, a very honoured international all-breed judge, and highly respected Boston breeder who wrote "The Boston Terrier", a book that went to at least 5 editions, called it "the kiss of God" and considered it the icing on the cake as far as perfect markings were considered.

Can the Haggerty spot be a swirl in the hair pattern, rather than a dot of color? That's what my guy has...
