I guess it all depends on where you get your boston.

I adopted my Buddy (purebred, no papers) from the local dog shelter. He would have been put to sleep if not adopted. And I paid a whopping $15 for him!!

If you bought from a pet store you not only over-paid but you baught a puppy mill puppy! Pets stores buy "in bulk", wholesale from puppy mills and back yard breeders and then triple the price they pay.

The practice of selling animals from pet shops promotes impulse buying and irresponsible breeding for profit. They buy puppies in large quanities from puppy mills or back yard breeders that ALWAYS have puppies available for sale. These operations are exactly what the name implies. They mass produce puppies with the prime motive as money. Their breeding dogs are kept in very poor conditions and are often malnourished. The dogs are never tested for genetic diseases and may not receive vaccinations or worse yet have been over-vaccinated with cheap or old stock. Puppy mills often get their breeding dogs from people in a hurry to get rid of dogs for some reason, public auctions and occasionally they are stolen from their owners. Females are bred ever heat cycle until they are worn out and then they are sentenced to death. The horror of puppy mills is encouraged every time a puppy is bought from a puppy store.

How do you know that your puppy comes from one of these places? The main reason is that responsible breeders will not, nor do they need to sell puppies to pet stores. Good breeders want to make sure that their puppy goes to a good home and is well cared for, for the rest of its life. They want to be actively involved in screening the home that their puppy is going to. Breeders are also concerned about keeping track of their puppies that they produce. They want to know about any health problems that their lines may carry. A pet store generally never hears about their puppies once they leave the store, and really don't care. They have waiting lists for their puppies and you will NEVER see an ad in the paper for them.

The pet store is one of THE worst places to buy a puppy and as long as there is a market for pet store puppies other dogs will be condemned to death by mass breeding only so that a few people can make some money with no thought of their "products" welfare. This is not to say that a good pet has never come out of a pet store, as many have, but for each that has many more have not. Remember when you buy a puppy you are adding another member to your family, not just another piece of furniture that can be disposed of at the smallest whim, and you are responsible for every piece of extra baggage that puppy comes with. Why take the risks when so many reputable breeders are there to guide you along the way of your dogs development?

Well i guess i am just a sucker for a cute dog, but The pet store did pay for the vet visits up to 21 days and the vaccines were almost all up to date. I don't mind the extra baggage, and i do see peeve as another family member. The potty training is going well, i just need to work on the biting and any help that way is appriciated!!

I am interested in getting a BT within the next 6 or 8 months. I am expecting to pay $1000+ from a responsible breeder and expect to be on a waiting list for quite some time.

I look forward to learning all there is to know about being wrapped around the little paw of a BT

in the uk Bostons are priced around £1500 , they are KC registered , some ppl are selling them for less DLR and believe me dog lover registration is not worth the paper its printed on its a back yard breeders pedigree, both mine are UK kC reg , eye tested and clear , when i breed all my puppies will be health tested before they go with there new families and are all sold with breeding restrictions on there papers and in there sale contract , and i offer a life time of support and will take the dog back if they have any problems and that lasts as long as the dog does ,

Oh I wish we could keep Pet stores from selling puppies or live animals PERIOD over here in the States! However, as long as people continue to buy them, they continue to support both the puppy mill that keeps pumping them out and the pet store its self!

The only answer I can come up with is EDUCATION and letting people know what damage they are doing by buying from a pet store (or a puppy farm) and what health problems they are preputating!

Please people, Do NOT buy from the newspaper, pet store, puppy farm or a back yard breeder.

The Boston Terrier Club of America has a breeder referal service as do all AKC Pure Breed Parent clubs. Always check with them before buying a puppy. You will save yourself a lot of money on vet bills etc.

Thanks for listening....

I got Rocco for a bargain, about $325 in 2003. In FL the average price range now is $500-$700. If you go to a puppy store (Which I DO NOT recommend, expect to pay $1200 or more). If you want to get a puppy you are much better off finding a responsible breeder on your own. This way the puppy will be more socialized and healthier. If you want to adopt a BT from a BT rescue group you can get one for about $275 and they come up to date on all shots, spayed or neutered and microchipped.
