Smile Pet Insurance
Old 08-11-2007, 12:35 AM   #1 (permalink)

Hi. Just discovered this site. I love Boston Terriers and hope to get one before year end, but my question is about pet insurance in the US. Don't know if the topic has already been discussed (haven't managed to get through all the posts yet).

My daughter will be moving to the US in a few months time and will need pet coverage for her two-year-old dog. What is the best insurer in the US?

Has anyone heard of, or does anyone have, Vetinsurance? It's just in Canada at the moment but will be offering policies in the US, soon.

Thanks.

I just heard a radio talk show program about pet insurance, and did some research on my own as well. Here's what I have to offer on this topic, for what it's worth.

Pet insurance is a waste of money for probably 90% or more pets out there. For the most part, the only time it was recommended was if the pet has a history of medical problems, or requires prescription meds. The insurance helps offset those costs.

Be careful. The door is wide open for being scammed or taken advantage of with something like this. Do your homework!

Thanks, BCoat. Guess it's like car/house insurance. We hope we won't need to use it but when something happens it's good to be covered.

Hi,
We had pet insurance for our bullmastiff when pet insurance first came out. She's 7 now. We had it for awhile but then found we were spending more money. I think it has come a long way though. We are getting a boston puppy this week and he will be taking a training course at our local petsmart. Petsmart has an animal hospital called Banfield and I hear they have their own pet insurance. I heard that it covers 100% of regular visits. That's pretty good! IT's about $20 something a month (so I hear)... I will be checking it out.

Banfield Puppy Wellness plan.

Covers all the shots and the cost of spay/neuter. Free office visits.

I had my female on that plan.

Costs $99.00 to start it then $20.00 a month.

It was a good deal for me with all the shots and the spay.

I didn't renew it after the 1st year. Went to another vet.
