Question Are two better than one?
Old 10-21-2007, 02:17 PM   #1 (permalink)

This is the perfect place to find answers to some questions I have so here goes:

We found a sweet, little girl on the website of the same kennel where we got Nibbler and are thinking of making an appointment to visit her in person. I'm a little iffy about the idea of having 2 Bostons especially since our 4 cats still don't get along with the one we have now but I love everything about Boston Terriers - their ears, their snuffles and snorts, their sweet personalities plus I just love Nibbler's smooshy little face and his adorable bug eyes....lol I can't help but want another one!

For those out there who have 2 or more - can you tell me the pros and cons of owning more than 1? When it comes to taking them outside, do you take them together or separately? Separate crates or no? Will my Boston take to a baby if we brought her home? How about behaviors when they're together? Will they feed off each other when getting into mischief? Will they be more interested in playing with each other instead of spending time with us? Any advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your responses!

thats a goed question. the answer isn't that simple. because they always have their own personallity. i have one dog now and i find that its a lot easier than 2 or more dogs. i have had 4 at one stage and that was a very busy time. the dogs cling to each other but did come to us for their cuddles. wat my experience is is that if you want to work with your dog then you need to spend a lot of time with each individual. if you let them be together all the time you will find that they will seek each other more than if you take them out one at a time. dogs can play easily with each other than how we play with them. they will get up to mischief if you let them but you have that in your hands how you raise them and what you allow. a lot of boston owners here in holland say that if you have one they become more human but when you have two the stay more doggy. the baby shouldn't be anymore problem than with your first dog. i hope you have something with this information!

I will never have just one dog if I can help it! My girls will cuddle with me and/or my husband as well as each other, especially if we are not around! They got in alot of trouble especially when they were younger! They tag-teamed squirrels at our old house. The squirrel would be running on top of the fence and Annie would chase the critter to a section of fence that was a bit wobbley and Tippy would be waiting there to hit the fence to knock the squirrel off ! Thankfully the squirrel was pretty agile and would stay on top or fall off the other way. But the girls sure had fun trying !

By the way, I have not noticed that either one of my girls have more of a doggy personality. In fact, I believe that they think they are humans! It's more the way you treat them. If you reward more human-like characteristics, they will continue the behavior! Having an older brother/sister is also helpful in training the younger pup!!

I noticed that the OP asked about seperate crates. My puppies aren't ready to be brought home yet but I am curious about this. I know I have some shopping to do to be prepared for them. Do I need to buy 2 seperate crates or can they share?

We have two bostons, and from our experience I think you'll probably want to have separate crates - especially if one of them already things of the current on you have as their own. Our Bostons are pretty defensive of their little homes inside our home

----------

To answer the original post...

We first bought our youngest, Chloe, as a pup and soon afterwards struggled with the idea of getting a 2nd. We went back and forth for a couple of months trying to decide. Then we heard from a friend about Duke. He was owned by an older man, who had passed away, and Duke was subsequently passed on to a couple of relatives. They apparently never really were "dog people" and they pretty quickly got fed up with Duke's antics (marking in the house, storm anxiety, etc.). So anyway, we heard that they were trying to find a new owner for Duke and that they'd pretty much given up and were planning to just drop him off at the pound.

So we took Chloe over to meet Duke. They hit it off pretty well, so we "rescued" Duke from his owners.

We, Chloe included, couldn't be happier. Our two bostons seem to be great friends. They play with each other several times a day, know just how to push each other's buttons, and they clean each other (tongue baths) regularly.

As esther said above, it's going to be very dependent upon the personalities of the dogs & people involved (and in your case, the cats too!). In our case, it turned out to be a great situation for all of us!

in my case I have 2 puppies coming over. I guess I can give em each their own crate. Now comes the next question of wire cage or fiberglass. Recommendations please?

. i used a wired crate but i coverd it with a blanket. pups feel safe in a dark crate. they also can't see everything which i find usefull. but a plastic one does the same job. the choice is yours for the pup it makes no diffrence..
