Question Did our breeder lie??!!
Old 01-22-2008, 10:57 PM   #1 (permalink)

We have a 10 week old BT girl who is 7 lbs. 10 oz. We saw the mother BT (about 13 lbs.) and the dad BT is supposed to be 14 lbs. But our little girl is sooo big for 10 weeks! Did our breeder lie to us? After similar size questions/responses... I'm scared.

Since we picked her up, we noticed that 2 of her littermates that the breeder still has left are now being described as 8 weeks old! What do you think? There are other little things that have occured that make us wonder about the breeder's honesty, too. I would love to know if we have ended up with a much larger BT than we intended.

Also, we went for a puppy vet visit today and the vet we saw said regarding my size question, "I don't want to cause controversy, but I had to look at her chart again to make sure she was a full BT. I'm not saying that she isn't, but maybe 98%. I'm just saying that she doesn't have the most 'typical' boston traits." I explained that we have AKC papers and the pedigree chart... but, what does that mean???!!! The vet also said they typically will double the puppy's weight at 16 weeks old and use that to determine the adult weight. That will make her a huge BT!!

my boston weighs 16.5lbs and is a medium size. his litter contained one dog that weighs more than 21.56lbs. this is still within the breed standard as they may weigh upto 25.3lbs. there can be diffrences within a litter of pups. if your dog is pure bred is something you can check with where the papers are registred. here in holland that is where the pedigrees are given out and it's called the dutch kennelclub. there should be something like that there in america.
it sounds like you haven't chosen a reputable breeder. my breeder telss me everything i need to know and is prepared to show all the neccesary papers even from the dogs before mine.

No breeder can evry guarentte the size of your boston. The standard is between 15 - 25lbs but there are some bigger and some smaller. My god weighs 23 lbs and is a full bred boston. All bostons are diffrent.

you can't guarentee the dog is pure bred if there aren't any papers with the dog.(with a not registerd dog you'll never know if there had been another breed crossed with it) this may cause the dog to have diffrent sizes.

My Boston is 3yr 5 months and she is right at 20lbs. She is not fat, I take time to take her out on walks and feed her twice a day.

My BT Jake is going on 8 months and he weights in at 21lbs at the moment. He is a purebred with papers. He is not fat but he is very buff looking. There isn't any fat on him but he is a big boy.

My boy weighs a little over 24 lbs. His parents were very small.

Can you really define love by 5 or 10 lbs? Or personality? Or intelligence?

Does your breeder take back unwanted puppies? I hoped so.

Your "breeder" may not have been completely honest with you about a lot of things, but it is possible to have a wide range of size, even among littermates.
The standard is 10-25 pounds.

My Turbeaux is big, 28 pounds at the present time, although he has been as big as 32 pounds at his heaviest and laziest. He looks great now, all muscle and in great shape. He is definitely too big to meet standard, but he is pure BT through and through. In other words, pure bred but not well bred.

Your baby might be a member of the "big girls club" but that does not make her any less loved and cherished. If she is a pet her size really would not make much of a difference, would it?

Would love to see pics of your little girl!
