Default Itching and Scratching
Old 01-23-2008, 10:30 PM   #1 (permalink)

My Boston Terrier is about seven months old now and he has a terrible itching and scratching problem. We have brought him to the vet several times, different vets at that to try to pinpoint the problem, we have eliminated any skin disease, parasites etc. We have been told that it's probably allergies and to start with the food as this is a common issue with Boston's. I think we have changed his food several times as per advice of the vet. Benedryl does not help. We have tried oatmeal shampoos etc..... our pup itches so bad he breaks his skin, which the vet gave us a steroid for, it actually works to help with inflammation and sores but as soon as we stop giving them to him, it starts all over again and honestly I do not want to give him drugs his whole life. As a result of all our pups itching, scratching, dragging his body along the carpet, he has resulted in dramatic hair loss. Vets can't seem to help us. Does anyone else have these problems and if so, any suggestions?

i have had a cockerspaniel with the same problem. he went completely bald and the sides of his ears teared which was very painfull as well as itching. the is an allergy test wich the vet can do. with this they can see what he's allergic to. there is then a medicine that will be created for his allergys which he will need to be injected with. this is called hyposencibilisation. it's pretty expencive but works.first he will be injected a couple of times a month but this will become less and less as they become immuun to the allergy. eventually the allergy dissapears.

Carter is 4 yrs old and we have been having the same problems for, well forever it seems. He had open sores and was a real
mess. He is also on Steroids I have him down to a quarter of a pill a day, he still scratches but not nearly as bad and no
open areas. I have tried sereral foods, the latest is "call of the Wild" which is grain free. Unless this one works I have not
gotten any different results from many kinds tried. Have you found any solutions yet?

Hi JBL
i know this is an old post but here is my input. this is an allergy,I have a girlly that use to scratch one ear really bad, depending what u r feeding your little guy or girl it has to be "grain free" the fillers ar eterrible for that 2. The order listed in the ingredients on the bag are very important they should read like chicken meal, chicken, turkey, turkey meal, potato etc.
here are some good brands
GO!
NOW!
EVO
EAGLE PACK
NUTRO
INNOVA
ORIJEN
