Default Boy or Girl?
Old 09-05-2008, 06:17 AM   #1 (permalink)

Hi Everyone,

I am thinking of getting a BT.

I currently have a male Great dane and two female English Cocker Spaniels. I am not planning on getting a BT until the cockers are about 2 years old (currently both under a year) but in England you have to get your name down for a Boston very early as they a very few and far between! And there are never any in rescue!

But I was wondering what sex I should go for? My great dane is very laid back and would be fine with another male in the house (he is castrated), but I read that male bostons can be a bit territorial and possibly aggressive to other dogs? I'd be happy to have a female but over here they are about $1000 more expensive than males which is quite a lot of money! And I think my current two female cockers would not like another girl in the house as they already get upset with each other over toys/food.

I'd appreciate everyones thoughts on this!

Thanks

Becky

Seeing how your male Dane is so laid back I really don't see a problem getting a male BT. As with any breed socialization is key, and BT's are not an overly aggressive or protective breed, so as long as the puppy is properly socialized and particularly since he'll be brought up around the other dogs I don't think getting a male would be a problem.

As a matter of fact, statistics show that the worst dog-on-dog bites vets see are usually from females in the same home! Having a little royal bitch myself at my house I know how they can be!

I think it would only be a concern if your dane was dominant or very territorial/protective....

Good luck! And I wish there weren't any BT's in shelters here either!! There are too many poor babies that need homes, it's unfortunately never ending...

Thanks for the reply!

Yes I'm confident my Dane wont mind, we looked after a male cocker spaniel for a friend for 3 weeks and he didnt mind at all, and has never been bothered by any dogs coming into our house!

I can totally understand what you said about female dogs! My two can get a bit feisty at times!

I looked on a florida Boston rescue site, I couldnt believe how many there were! It's so sad, the poor things

I had my heart set on a female BT, but many more males were available. So after months of passing up males to wait on a girl, we finally went to look at a male, and he has been a dream! I don't think there's a lot of difference between them in this breed- its more indivual personalities. I did train my boy not to mark every bush on a walk.

I currently have one of each. They are both great but its more of a personality than the gender. My female is very dominant at home but for some reason is very scared and insecure at the dog parks. She has been there plenty of times plus she doesnt share her toy very well. I have seen her snap at so many big dogs trying to take it from her. My male on the other hand is very submissive at home and very socialable at he the dog park but he always gets attacked by other dogs because he plays hard. He also doesnt like puppies for some reason the other day I was at the dog park and there were 2 different people with 2 different pit puppies and he snapped at both of them. I am unsure if it was bc i was petting them or if bc they were jumping at him... I wish i knew how to stop that. My two get in each others faces all the time they sound like an old married couple. THey never hurt each other though and they always defend each other from other aggressive dogs. For instance my mom has 4 bostons which are my 2s mom and brothers and sister. THey for some reason always end up fighting BLOODY. My boyfriend was playing fetch with all of them but my mothers males arent fixed and one was trying to hump my male and he turned on him and pinned him drawing blood from his nose and Bella jumped right in to help. I dont understand these twos problem they were born at the same time and have been around each other alot.

I have an 11 month old male BT and he is not territorial at all. He has been neutered, which does make a difference. Buster is the sweetest dog ever. He loves everyone.
We also have an older male mixed breed dog, who is very mellow. They play together and get along great.

well i know that its not the best idea. but i found our male bt online. he was 400$ and we paid 275$ for shipping. Poor baby i know but maybe if your tight on money it would be cheaper to find one here in the U.S. and ship him to you. But adopting is a great idea. maybe there are some animal shelters in your area.

If your interested in adopting, pm me your state and I'll try to find some local rescue organizations. Personally, shipping a dog you've never met is a bad idea (esp. from MO aka puppymill central). Most reputable breeders refuse to ship a dog anyways, my two cents. Anyways, if your interested let me know and I'll see what I can dig up for you.
