Our puppy has horrible gas! What could cause this? How can we avoid it?! It smells like rotten eggs...

Ours has the same problem. He also has trouble with vomiting several times a week. A pet nutritionist suggested we go with a sensitive stomach dog food. We are transitioning him to Nutro Natural Choice. He's 10 mos old and our vet has him on adult food already, but this brand comes in both puppy and adult formulas. Right now he's getting a mixture of old food and new, but he does seem better the last few days. You could check with your vet, but it might be worth a try. Just fyi, we were using Purina Pro Choice. They have a sensitive stomach formula as well, but the nutritionist showed us the ingredients and there is very little difference between the sensitive and regular. It was about the same price as the Nutro brand.
Hope this helps.

Food can cause this, when Rosco was on beneful he had horrible gas. I switched to a new food and it got better. Try a better food, or like the above post said, it might be a sensitive stomach. Your vet could probably recomend something. They are a gassy breed, but it shouldnt be that bad

Good luck!

Purina One for Sensitive Systems was recommended to us, but that didn't work well for Opie. However, he does great on Purina One chicken and rice. He sometimes passes gas and it is bad when he does. But he doesn't do it that often. I think they are gassy because they eat so fast and swallow so much air.

I must have gone through a dozen foods trying to find one that worked for my first BT.
The stink, the diarrhea the puking...ugh.

I've now settled on Natural Balance Lamb and Rice. I have my new puppy on it too. Neither one of them stink and since it isn't packed with a bunch of fillers, less poop! Yeah.

Try stopping canned foods. They often make gas smell bad!

Could be onto something dids and I'm going to try it. I feed a 6 star "no grain" food but own a little "outhouse" named Daisy. I have tried most other suggestions, including yogurt to no avail. They are a gassy breed for sure! I'll let you know how she does sans canned.

If she's getting table food or anything like that it can make them gassier as well.

Default Nutro choice
Old 11-16-2008, 01:33 PM   #10 (permalink)

We use the Nutro max puppy chix and rice, very good. no scraps, no junk, no gravies, just healthy food. Little less filler then Nutro natral choice, more filler then this one. less poops, less mistakes as a puppy.

Our dog loves eating clovers and grasses and it seems to have helped her with not vomiting. One of our friends have 2 bostons and they are older, she says' they will grow out of vomiting, Ours only vomits when she gets real excited or corrected. Hope this helps. Nutro is good and works. good luck
