Default Seizures
Old 03-14-2007, 11:05 PM   #1 (permalink)

Hi, my husband (bryan) and I are new to the site. We have two bostons, Chloe Belle a 3 yr old female full of ENERGY and Duke an 8 yr old male full of kisses and snuggles.
Duke has had 3 seizures (mild) that we are aware of since we adopted him Oct. of '05. We later found out that the previous owners were aware of the seizure activity (they just didn't tell us).
I was curious if anyone else had experienced this and if there was any advice.
His seizures have only lasted 3-4 min tops. He does not lose consciousness or bladder/bowel control. We were told not to medicate at this time, since they are so spaced out. Medicating is apparently a lifelong committment once you start giving them the medicine. So, once you start, you cannot take your pup off the meds.
Thanks for any advice or thoughts!

I have a pomeranian that has seizures and is on medication. I have never heard that if you start them on the meds that you can't take them off of them. In fact I have reduced mine's meds since we started. I agree though that if he only has them once in a while and they are mild, I would just monitor. Mine has one every 3 mos or so even with the medicine but that's not bad. I was told that the mild ones don't hurt them. What does your vet say?

Our vet was the one who initially informed us of the "not taking them off the meds once they start".....He did say that Duke's seizures were mild enough and infrequent enough that they weren't harmful to his health. So, that gave me some piece of mind, although it is sure hard to watch them go through it..........
Did your vet advise if you should talk/pet/comfort them while the seizure took place. I heard from someone that it can increase their anxiety?? I'm not sure....I would think it would be good for them to know that you're there......?

I hadn't heard that it causes more anxiety. I feel like you do. I like him to know I'm there for him.
