Default Ox tail
Old 12-04-2006, 11:21 AM   #1 (permalink)

My girlfriend and I were in WholeFoods last night and after I realized that I wasn't about shell out $20 for a steak, I asked the butcher if he had any bones that I could give my dog. He directed me over to the refrigerated case and said that a lot of people give their dogs ox tail bones. I figured $5 for five good-sized bones wasn't a bad deal, so I gave them a shot.

I boiled them in a pot of water for about 45 minutes, let them cool and then threw one on the floor for Jake. He didn't go insane like I thought he would, but in less than a couple minutes, he slurped down every single piece of meat that was on that bone and almost swallowed the bone itself (they're kinda small).

Next time in you're the grocery store, you might want to take a look for them.

just so ya know.... boiling the bones takes all the nutrition out of the bones and can make them splinter!! It is a much better idea to bake them in the oven!!

give them raw! i never boil or bake any bones. is healthier to give them raw as it wont give a reaction in the bouwls. the bone is soft and they will chew them until thy're gone. by boiling and baking the bone becomes hard.....

is it safe for BT's to actually swallow the broken pieces of bones? i've always thought that it's bad for them because it can cut their intestines and more.

that depends on what tipe of bones. when you cook or bake them they become splintery. but wild dogs also eat bones to get the marrow which is vewry nutritional. i'd watch him the first time he eat one then you can asses the situation.
