Default Seasonal allergies
Old 04-30-2007, 02:51 PM   #1 (permalink)

My Ozzy seems to have allergic reactions to all the pollen here in RI. I had never heard of that in BT's before. When it warms up here, he scratches himself to the point that he gets bald spots. His eyes also start to itch him and I have to hold ice packs on his eyes to give him some relief. Does anyone know of anything like this? I guess pets really are indications of their owners b/c I have the same problems.

Our male BT has allergies and our female has them on occasion......Duke sneezes ALOT in the spring and our most recent adventure was waking up to him itching like crazy and discovering that he was covered in hives all over from head to toe and his eyes were swollen! It was pretty scary! I was worried his airway might swell, so we took him to the emergency vet, and they treated him with a shot of Benadryl......then it happened again the next day. So, the next time they gave him a Steroid dose pack and he got all better! :D

Has Ozzy been treated with any meds? Oh, by the way, these events usually occur in the Spring here in TN and both my husband and I suffer from allergies too

My female BT has problems with allergies occasionally. My vet recommended giving her Benadryl. It seems to help. She doesn't usually get a real bad case though. Her eyes get red and she does get a bit itchy.

Hi,
I don't have a boston yet but I have a bullmastiff who has terrible seasonal allergies. She gets cortisone shots to help relieve her symptoms. When she has the allergies it's awful, she chews herself til she bleeds, her eyes get all weepy and her face breaks out. We've tried everything and benadryl for us doesn't help. The cortisone shots only last about 6 weeks. This past time she had to have a higher dose. We've tried oral prednisone and unfortunately these steroids are not permanent long term solutions. It can have a serious effect on their other organs. We have tried holistic treatments too. I don't know what to tell you other then maybe bring your dog to a vet who specializes in dermatology. We haven't spent the money on allergy testing yet as we heard it's expensive and there's no guarantee. We may go that route depending on how she does.
Good luck.
I sympathize.

My Diezel has very serious food allergies. He is also allergic to several tyoes of grass and trees. How do i know?? I finally had an allergy test done on him because he was always breaking out, scratching himself raw and had all these hotspots all over him. THey gave me the list of things he was allergic to including all the foods, which were almost any and every ingredient they put in the dog foods. Your Ozzie could very well be allergic to pollen, grass, or whatever, these dogs do love to eat grass, at least everyone i have owned. The allergy test is kind of expensive, but for me it was worth it, because i was going thru all kinds of different foods trying to figure out what he was allergic to. THey also gave me a list of foods he could eat, so that helped too. He still breaks out, but if he gets too bad, we go to the vet and get some prednisone steroid for him and he is all better in a day or two. Benadryl is not strong enuf for his allergies. Hope this helps u out
