Default Do you trim your Boston's nails yourself? - 06-14-2007, 01:25 PM

Jack is in need of a nail trim. I was wondering if anyone trims their dogs nails on their own and if so, what kind of clipper do you use/reccommend? I've never done this before but I think Jack will pretty much let me do whatever to him.
TIA!!

Yes I do trim Shae's nails myself. There is a dog nail clipper you can get at wal marts that is easy to use. When Shae goes to sleep I cut her nails. You just have to be sure not to cut to much. As there is a vein that is in there nail and you can see it blueish color in the nail..Don't cut down that far or it will bleed. Good luck.

i cut fausto's nails myself too. i use a clipper that is for people. if you clip them when it's sunny you will see the vein through the nail.

Question cutting nails - 08-27-2007, 04:00 PM

My Boston is pretty easy-going about it, but my bulldog is impossible. The vet even has a hard time doing it. Anybody know how to cut the nails of a dog that refuses to cooperate?

begin with touching the nail. if he tollerates this give him a treat. do this several times a day. if this goes well try to touch the foot. if this goes well pick up the foot. then pickup the foot and touch the nail. then hold the nail. then touch the nail with the clippers. then try to clip one nail. next two nails en zo forth..... the key is take your time and take small steps at a time!

esther gives some pretty solid advice above!

We also trim both of our Boston's nails ourselves. We use clippers like the one at the top of this picture. Both of our pups are pretty apprehensive about getting their nails trimmed, so we started rewarding them during the process with their favorite treat - peanut butter.

We started off with my wife holding them, and using her extra hand to scoop out a little peanut butter and let them lick away while I trimmed. It's kind of a tedious process, but it definitely helps them to take the focus off of what you're doing to their little feet

Here lately, they seem to have grown much more accustomed to me trimming their nails (though, they definitely don't enjoy it ). So much so, that the last couple of times I've trimmed their nails by myself, with no peanut butter. They of course got lots of peanut butter afterwards!

thanks! fausto also hates the clipping of his nails. i tought him the same way. he now under goes the clipping with his ears flat on his head. i can also trim them by myself. as soon as i am finished the ears come up and he runs to the cubboard where the treats come from!

Default Trimming at home - 09-06-2007, 02:01 PM

Our Boston doesn't even seem to notice we cut her nails. She lays on her back and just kinda waits for us to be done. It's been like that since the first time and we didn't do any of the prep stuff like getting her used to having her feet touched or anything. My pug on the other hand I socialized like crazy and he just won't have it. Before I met my fiance, I had resorted to taking him to the vet (after an episode with long deep scratches down my neck). Now, together we can hold him down enough to cut his nails. Hopefully, watching Domino behave so well will rub off on him. I'm hoping anyway. Good luck and hopefully the prep work listed above by esther will help you out.
