Unhappy Help!!! BT with Loose Stool
Old 03-04-2008, 01:06 PM   #1 (permalink)

Hi I'm new to the site and hope to learn from everyone's experiences'

My lil Duke is 8 months old and I've adopted him a week ago.
this past weekend he's started having really bad diarrhea, and yesterday AM he had some blood in his loose stool. took him to the vet and the vet prescribed some medication and ID canned food. started the meds last night along with his new food.

The breeder was feeding him Innova puppy food, I first thought that his loose stool was due to the stress of moving into a new house and all, but then again when i saw the blood yesterday i got really worried. this morning his stool was still slightly loose but getting better, and NO BLOOD.

I'd like to know what others out there are feeding or have fed their BT's at about 8 - 12 months old? As a BT owner what would you think is the best food for this breed.

Thank you

New BT owner
Floyd

raw diet is the best thing because this is what their bouwls are made for. no diahrea, no stinky passing wind just a beautiful and healthy boston!

Took my Duke to the vet and was prescribed, Prescription I/D Canned food and some medication which i give 1/2 a pill in the am and the other 1/2 in the pm. 48 hours later he had his first solid stool.

now i just hope that I can get him off the canned food and get him back to his dry food...

Ester, can you please define RAW DIET?
being that duke is my first dog in 10 years I want to make sure I give him what is best for him.

Thanks in advance.l

raw diet is a complete food that is based on raw meat. this is very good for the bouwls of your dag. in canned and dry foodsa there are additives that a dog wouldn't eat if it lived in the wild. the dog is a carnivore and doesn't eat dry food in the wild. look further in this subject and read what jeanebostons has written. i cant give you any recommondation of a brand as i don't live in the states but other forum users have written brands and websites where you can get more info.

Thanks Esther... I'll do that...

tried to put Duke back on his dry food,(which he ate) but his stool became loose again.

So I'm going to continue on his canned food from the vet for a few more days as i also do research on raw food for him...

Thank you very much for your input and help...

your very welcome. maybe good to know that you don't need to switch gradually with raw diet. you can stop immidiately and start with raw without any problem.
good luck!

Smile My 19 Month Old Boston - loose stool - 1 month
Old 10-23-2008, 06:24 PM   #7 (permalink)

A month ago Baxter started with loose stools. I took him to the vet with stool sample - he weighed 24.7 lbs. He came back with cocitia bacteria - was put on methodiozole (flagil). Two weeks later he was still the same no change. Brought him back and they put him on another dose of above medication and ID Perscription Diet Food. After feeding the dog rice and the special diet he still had loose stool and looked thinner. I took him back and he weighed 22.7 lbs. The vet was concerned with the weigh loss and took all kinds of fecal and blood tests. The bacteria was gone and all the blood came back normal, except the fecal came back with meat and muscle in it. That meant that meat and muscle from the dog food was not getting digested prior to passing it. I just brought him back today for another blood test for a pancreas problem they think he may have. He would have to take medication (I researched the cost, approx $150/Month). I love Baxter would pay it as long as he could have a good long life. I will not know for a week on the results of the blood test.

My suggestion to you is get the fecal test and I hope you have better luck than I have been having. I will let you know the results. By the way - I am feeding him larger quantities this week and have not excersized him like I use to and he maintained his weight this week. I hope that is a good sign, but since he is getting more food and not excersizing he should have gained weight. At my wits end, hopefully we and you will have a good end to a scary story.
