Default Is it a seizure??
Old 08-28-2008, 04:15 PM   #1 (permalink)

TKO is four years old now and has been having these episodes since she was a year old, but they are so spaced out it's hard to tell what they are.

What happens is almost always at night, say about 1:00am she wakes up in a panic because her whole body gives a jolt, then it stops for a second, she'll relax a bit, and it will come again, sometimes three or four times in a row. These jolts are very agressive as we can't even hold her little body down or still. She has not had an episode in over a year so we thought we were in the clear, but then it happened last night for about two hours. These jolts scare her and us a lot, they also make her very uneasy.

We have had her to the Vet for this but they say unless they see it they have no idea.

Any thoughts??

That sounds like it could be a seizure but the vet is correct it is tough to say for sure if you can't observe it. When this happens do her eyes seem to roll back or does she appear to "not have the lights on inside" That is another indication of of seizure.

Whatever you do do not try to hold her down, if it is a seizure then she is unable to control herself and holding her down can damage her muscles and cause strains and sprains.

Also, one of things my vet had me do for my dog that had Seizures was to buy some Karo Syrup and try to get a bit of that in his mouth when he was having a seizure. Sometimes that can bring them around, depending on the reason of the problem.

Thanks for the help Snowy, her eyes seem fine, however the next time it happens I will take a good look at her pupils to see how big they are.

We have tried a few things to get her out of it, one time I thought maybe if I gave her something else to think about it might make her forget about it and she'd come around, so I took her out to the living room and we played some fetch with one of her balls. She played like always except when she would jolt she would get very nervous and run around more with her ball instead of bringing it right back. This may not sound like much but TKO is a flyball dog and has played her whole life, "she always brings her ball straight back".

Where would one find this Karo Syrop?? What is it??

Thanks again.

You can buy Karo Syrup at any grocery store, near the pancake syrups. However, if she can run and sorta of play while this is going on then it is not a seizure. If she is completely unresponsive while these jolts and spasms are happening then it is probably a seizure. but if you can make a noise or do something that gets any kind of a response out of her then it mostly likely NOT a seizure. If it continues you should definately get it on video camera and get a veterinary evaluation becuase it could be indicitative of a nueological disease or conidition, such as a tumor etc.

if your dog has seizures you can NEVER get her out of it. this is a type of short circuiting of the brain. its never something you or your dog can controle. seizures come in many diffrent forms and is not difinable with one characteristic. the only thing that can controle this is antiepileptica and is only available at your vets. if you can get your dog to play duting an eppisode it is not a seizure! if having one the dog has no contole of any of his muscles including bladder and bouwl. after having one they are totally exhausted en want to sleep. try to film the happenings including how he reacts with the ball. then show it to the vet. i doubt its epileptie.
