Old 09-09-2008, 09:45 AM   #1 (permalink)

I had my pup @ a campfire over the weekend, and i noticed her one eye had red, thought it was just bothered by the smoke, it went away in the morning.

now last night came home from work same thing in her eye. & it didn't go away this morning.

What is it? is it common, should i go to the vet?

Please help!

I have googled away and i think it is Cherry Eye, Tana is now 16 weeks old.

'Cherry eye' is the prolapse of this gland, which then protrudes from behind the third eyelid, appearing like a cherry in the corner of the eye. Cherry eye occasionally occurs in young puppies, usually around the age of 10-16 weeks, due to weakness in the gland's normal attachments and is thought to be an inherited abnormality.

She goes to the vet tomorrow evening, I will let you know how it goes.

She is now wearing a E-collar, she hates it, she is scratching her eye way too much, the vet says it is usual, and we met a girl in the waiting room that had had a few bostons (& had one with her) says a few of her dogs have had it, and "it's nothing" & not to worry.

the vet prescribed and anti-infection steriod ointment that we put in her eye twice a day, it is supposed to shrink the swelling up to 30%, it has at least shrunk it by half, she was unable to close her eye, and now she can.

It's a simple surgery to fix, but doesn't want to do it right away, Usually within a month, (which seems like an etirenity to have that collar on) the other eye will also develep cherry eye. So we are waiting, as horrible as it is i want the other eye to develop it now, so she can have the surgery and have the collar off. She hates it. My normally upbeat, very excitable, fun, puppy hates life..

She is getting used to it, she will walk, and drink water with it on, do her commands, go to the bathrrom, but she won't eat with it on, we take it off when we can, when we can watch her closely to make sure she isn't rubbing it, usually when she is tired and lazing around on our lap, she will have it off.

Will keep you updated, it's been one week, & two days since it developed & it's been 5 days since we seen the vet.

Smile All fixed

She went in for surgery on tuesday, she got fixed & her eye surgery @ the same time.

She is not herself, she fond out that jumping onto her favourtie corner of the coach hurts, and she sits and waits at the bottom for someone to lift her, she is very whiny, and very cuddly (which i am enjoying), but i would understand she did just get fixed.

She isn't scratching @ her eye.

We go back in ten days for a check up. Her eye is looking much healthier already.

Hello, I am sorry to hear about your pup's eye problem. Our BT has had the exact same problem come up twice since we have had her. When we first got her she had already had the surgery to totally remove the gland from her left eye. She has had the problem in her right eye now twice, the first time I took her to the vet and he suggested surgery to "tack" it back down so she wouldn't loose tear reproduction. We too were looking to get her fixed at the same time but luckily the cherry eye went away before I scheduled the surgery and has come up once more afterwards and also went away on it's own again. I think that these dogs, having there protruding eyes, get very irritated from dusty environments and such which brings on the prbolem. I have yet to see the it again in her so hopefully it's only a temporary problem for her. I wish you all the best luck with your pup.
