Default Foamy Nose and Other Issues
Old 09-16-2008, 04:37 PM   #1 (permalink)

Sometimes after exercise my 4 month old BT gets foam around his nostrils. He very rarely but sometimes has what I think is laboured breathing (makes a snorting noise).

He also throws up occasionally and tends to get the hiccups daily. He was at the vet last month for a checkup and he was in good health. These issues have started since then. Any ideas? Should I take him back in to the vet? Your help is greatly appreciated.

He might have allergies. My friends BT gets foamy at the nose and it will be a little bloody, he has bad allergies. Talk to your vet, most dogs can take benedryl and it clears it up.

My pup Ellie (3 months) get a foamy nose at times. She doesn't seem bothered by allergies. I think it may be normal, but you may want to ask your vet next time you go in. As far as the hiccups, Ellie gets them as well occasionally, I wouldnt worry about them. And the throwing up, you may want to talk to your vet about this, have you changed his food recently? Look at the answer to a simmilar question at this website.

Could be two separate issues going on here. Allergies are pretty common, both of our pups have had an outbreak of hives, congestion, sneezing fits, etc. during the spring and fall seasons.

Bostons are also pretty notorious for having sensitive stomachs. Both of our pups could easily clear a room until we got them on a dog food that was a little easier for them to digest.

Thanks for the replies. I am taking him in to the vet tomorrow. The laboured breathing is reversed sneezing. I will let you know what the vet says...

You should have your dog checked for brachycephalic syndrome. The foamy nose after exercise is a sign of the nostrils being too small.

Just got back from the vet. He is having surgery next week for stenic nares and an elongated soft pallet. Supposedly this is very common with Boston Terriers. The vet thinks this might also be the cause of his vomitting. Thanks for all the advise.

I have learned a huge lesson about looking into a vet's experience with your breed of dog before going to them. The first vet he saw didn't even check his nose or throat. I am very lucky to have found a vet who not only knows a lot about BT's but also has one himself. I will let you know how he is after surgery. He might even stop snoring now...

Thanks for the link! That pretty much sums up what my vet said. I appreciate the response and the great advise.
