D'oh! nail trimming!!!!!
Old 09-20-2008, 07:57 PM   #1 (permalink)

Biscuits nails are like little weapons. I bought a run of the mill doggie nail clipper but he hates it. I do it when he is asleep but he wakes up and all nervous and moves to the other couch to sleep. Has anyone tried that pedicure thing they show on TV.
Thanks

We use a dremel with our BT. It is definitely less traumatic to the nail. Pablo has gotten used to it and tolerates it ok.

Dremels are the best! I use one on Rosco's nails and its less painful for them as well. I use one with a cord, but I've heard the cordless ones are quieter. If you get a dremel, use the 120 grit bit, and be careful not to keep it in one spot very long because it can burn them. I just spend a few seconds on one nail and go to the next one down so I wont get them too hot.

Question
Old 10-06-2008, 04:43 PM   #5 (permalink)

Where does one find a dremel & for about how much $ ?

Signed, the newbie. . . .

P.S. my recently retired parents have given me their female BT. They rescued her over a year ago, but she's 8-10 years old, extremely skittish & somewhat deaf. She does not like her paws touched, let alone held, etc.

You can get a cordless one at walmart for about $20. The cordless ones are quieter and probably easier to manuever that one with a cord. You wanna get 120 grit sanding bands, and just work on getting your dog used to the sound of it. Lots of treats and praise. Be careful not to burn your dogs nails though, dont spend too much time on one spot.

We use a cordless Dremel and they are cheap in Wal-Mart as ginnafer said above. It's all Daisy has ever known and she is 'almost' used to it now. As another poster mentioned, be aware you can get the nail hot and it will hurt the dog if you dwell in one spot too long. I'll never use clippers again. They're probably nice but I don't trhink I will ever gget the doggie one - can't be easy as it looks.

I'm kinda interested in trying to use a Dremel to trim our pups' nails.

Would this one be what you guys would recommend?

Yup. I use mine on the lowest setting with the 120 grit band and it works great. I will never cut Rosco's nails again. Again, just be careful not to let it get too hot on their nails. Spend a few seconds on one and go to the next one until the whole paw is done.

Awesome, I'm gonna give this a try. In the past, Chloe and Duke have never been too fond of clipping time, but once the clipping is done, they almost seemed to enjoy having their nails filed. Hopefully they like the dremel
