Default Blindness
Old 10-13-2008, 09:06 PM   #1 (permalink)

Jack turned 8 in June but has slowly been losing his vision to cataracts. Unfortunately we cannot afford the surgery to correct this problem but he is managing fine, is happy and is just the greatest dog. He gets around the house very well, including stairs and the backyard. However we are moving to a new house this week and I am very worried about him. Anyone have any advice how to make the transition easier? Thanks.

Our last Boston, Sammy, went blind in both eyes. When we would go to a new environment I used voice commands such a step up, turn right and also did sounds so he would know where I was. They are very bright dogs and can learn quickly. Being blind did not slow him down much ,once he learned where everything was. Just remebmer to let them know if something is moved, otherwise it's a lot of bumping. Do you have him on eye drops yet? Good luck!

I hope he adjusts to the new house, I really dont have any advice for that. On the other hand, I know someone that was in your position before, she designed some shirts, stickers and such and sold them on cafepress.com. I think she earned enough in a couple months or so to do the surgery on her dog, maybe you could do something like that? Here's her page, I think she donates it all to rescue now since Otis had his surgery.

Hi JacksMom,

My dog Spike is also blind in both eyes. Aside from the occasional bump when I forget to put something back in its accustomed place he does a great job navigating. It might be an easier transition for Jack if you don't introduce him to the house until its pretty much set up the way you want it. All the different stages of disarray associated with moving might give him a negative impression of the new digs. But just being moved to a new location with a different layout shouldn't throw him to much. Just let him acclimate to each room at his own pace and keep a close eye on him while he works out the layout in his head. I still have to give my dog a verbal cue from time to time. He knows if I say careful that he should proceed with caution. The big thing to watch for are chair and table legs, they can really whallop those protruding boston eyes. Good luck with your new place. My dog did have the surgery incidentally, 4k for each eye and he went blind again within a few weeks.
