Default BT Leg problem?
Old 11-13-2008, 04:24 AM   #1 (permalink)

Hello I have a 8 month old BT. She is very playful, loves to play ball or anything you will throw. However last night I picked her up like i would normally do and she started whelping. Very loud and excessively. I emetiantly put her down and she start to put all her weight on her leg. She put no wait on her back right leg. Nedless to say I freaked. Me and my gf waited a couple of minutes to see if anything changed. Finally she tried to walk and began to cry again. So we began to find the number to the vet, However she started walking like normnal with no limp. Then 2 min later and had her normal ball and was playing like normal. About 30 minutes later she was sitting on my lap and out of the blue started to cry, again favoring her leg. Again couple of min later she trotted of like normal. If anyone can give me any ideas what to do I would greatly appreciate it.

Hi Cameron!

See your veterinarian and let him make an exam and maybe some x-rays. She probably didn't brake a bone but sometimes a knee or a hip can be injured (sprained).
Hope everything will be all right with your puppy!

She could have luxating patella (LP). Its kinda common in Bostons, its where the kneecap (patella) can luxate out place. Get her checked at the vet asap, if it is lp and its caught early its treatable. Let us know how it goes at the vet, and hope she's ok.

This sounds like luxating patella to me. My 14 month old had it bad on both knees. She blew them both out at about 10 months. Needless to say, my heart was absolutely broken. I was told she needed surgery on both knees for her to ever recover. However, she was on anti-inflammatories for about 1 month and bed rest basically for about 2 months. I had to carry her to go to the bathroom and back. I slowly started walking her a little bit each day, especially walks uphill to build up the muscles around her knees. She runs and plays like normal now, but it was quite a long and heartbreaking process. Very best of luck to you, but don't jump at the first vet that tells you to get surgery. Get a second and third and fourth opinion. They are preying on your kind-heartedness and I was able to rehab my pup on my own.

So sorry to hear about this. It is so hard to deal with.

I would like to say also that when this did happen to me initially I found NO help on this forum, so I thought I would take the time to share my story.
Best of luck to you again,
Kris

There are four different grades of LP, the important thing is to get your little on to the vet to see what it is first. Heres a few links explaining what it is, and different treatments.

Have you talked to your breeder about this? A reputable breeder stands behind the health of their puppies and would also love to know if for sure your puppy has a luxating patella so they can keep track of the lines your puppy came from.

Did you see the OFA results of your puppy's sire and dam when you bought your puppy? Were their patellas sound?

Do let us all know what you find out. A patella check is a very easy procedure for a vet that knows what they are doing, to do. NO sedation or x-rays needed.
