Hello everyone, My name is Whitney and I live in Alaska, I don't have my puppy yet but I'm expecting to get him from Missouri in the beginning of September. My husband and I are hopefully going to close on our first house the end of August! We are very excited about that and about adding our new puppy to the family. I'm going to name him Brasco, and he should be about 8 or 9 weeks old when he finally gets here. Until then I'm just trying to prepare mentally and get all the advise and info I can. Looking forward to getting to know you all!
When we got our first pup, the things that i initially bought were a collar, leash, food/water bowls, chew toys and a soft stuffed toy and a crate. Oh, and carpet cleaner! The potty training thing was slightly difficult for us because we both worked. So, we chose to crate train her, but she was allowed to sleep in the bed with us at night. Are you planning to crate train?
We do plan on crate training him, both my husband and I work full time but right now I work nights and he works days so I'm hoping it will work out all right. My schedule changes every 4 months though Do you have any advise about how to start the crate training? Do i have to leave my new little playmate in his crate all the time until he gets used to going potty outside?
You don't have to keep him in the crate all the time, but if you aren't going to be paying attention to him, aka playing, feeding, or some other activity, it's usually best. Because it only takes a few seconds to decide to go potty and you need to be supervigilant for the signs (sniffing around, mostly). So, not all the time, but if you are doing something where you can't pay attention like cooking dinner, it is probably best to crate him. Good luck!!!
I have always had on hand a bottle of Nature's Miracle for cleaning up accidents!! Stuff works wonders!! I've always had things like, a crate, toys, dishes (I feed mine in the crate so I bought the ones that hook on), a few teething bones, a disposable camera (for the cute shots..LOL) good quality dog food, baby gates (too keep the pup from going where he/she doesn't need to go), leash, collar or harness and for me I hae a tie out stake for the front yard when I'm out there puttering around.....
As for crate training, it takes patience, understanding a few nights of interupted sleep....LOL... I usually put the crate beside the bed (I use mine for a night table, I have 2 squares of pine cut to about 3 inches around bigger then the crate, stained to match my bedroom furniture one on either side) then I am there and the pup knows it, I get whimpering and a little crying but usually with a Nylabone, a blanket, a wind up clock and a warmed up hot water bottle it isn't as bad as I thought it woudl have been...
