Default Too Much Jumping When Greeting??
Old 10-10-2007, 03:12 PM   #1 (permalink)

Hello All!
Me and my wife have a 6 month old female BT who has been nothing but a joy! She has all the basic training down(sit, stay, come, etc.), just like her 8 month old Yorkie brother.

The only issue we have is with her wanting to stand and sometimes jump on people when she initially meets them. She never bites, but will sometimes unintentionally give light scratches with her paws. We quickly correct her and she soon calms down, but this behavior happens basically everytime.

We are obviously aware that the breed is high in energy, which we love(we're an active family), but obviously this trait makes us a bit cautious around kids. I know it's never appropriate to compare or expect one breed to behave like another, but was wondering if it is a realistic goal to have the Boston greet people in a playful, yet tame matter like our Yorkie??

Would greatly appreciate any feedback you all could give on your experiences with this issue. Should you try to eliminate this habit all together? If this is common with the breed, how much of this trait should you try to regulate? Will the jumping/standing start to lessen as they get older?? Thanks in advance!!

My wife and I love our new BT, its our second one. I think the behavior you discuss and describe is pretty normal for a BT! They are so social, they have to greet new people or visitors. Advise new visitors to just put their hand down, palm facing out to stop the jumping, that should do it.
