Default Is she the only one like this?

My BT Peppie will be 9 moths old on the 5th of February and she will not go down stairs at all. She learned to go up them rather quickly.
It's kind of becoming a pain having to carry her down the stairs all the time. If we leave her she just sits and cries until someone comes and gets her. We leave the lights on for her and have tried coaxing her down with treats but she will not budge from that landing.
Are there other Bostons out there like this? Or is she the only one. I'd appreciate any advice or tips if anyone has some. Thanks.

I have no tips for you, but my friend's shitzu does the same exact thing and she's 8.

Okay so MoJo was doing this at my moms house(we don't have any steps at ours), and even though she is only 12 weeks old, we were carrying down the stairs like you said. Well my mom has a boxer who finally started paying attention to MoJo. Well it only took 3 times of Sadie going down the steps and Mojo being left at the top, that she gave in and tried coming down. So I guess my answer is have you tried having her around other dogs, and letting the other pup show her how it is done?

She has been around other larger dogs since the day we brought her home. There are 2 other large dogs that live here that go up and down the stairs all the time and sometimes it looks like she might just go down after them if she's really excited about going with them. She'll jump around and bark at them as they leave but it seems like she just doesn't have the courage to just go for it.

On a couple of occasions she actually went down just one step and then turned around and quickly got back on the landing. Sometimes I think she's just screwin' with us and she can actually do it but just rather have someone come get her.

I don't mind going to get her from the top of the stairs but my hubby has a knee injury and he's home with her during the day and some days the pains worse than others. She's very independent except for going down stairs. She's a funny little one!

Thanks for the input!

Lexi had the same problem, well kinda. We live in a 3rd floor apartment and at first she picked up on climbing up the stairs fairly quickly but was reluctant to go down them. So, what I did was put her harness on her and hold onto it very lightly to give her a secure feeling and so she wouldn't go tumbling head over heels. This took all of about 3 or 4 days and she finally got to where she will race me down and up the stairs after going to potty. I hope this will help you in any way at all.

it's pretty explainable that a boston doesn't walk down stairs. bostons are top heavy meaning that their front end is heavier than the back end. this will cause them tipping over when having to go down.

Have you tried placing the front 2 paws on the first step? That worked with Roger. Roger's 4 months.

We had the same problem with our two. What I did is take them all the way down to the bottom of the stairs and work with them on a couple of steps at a time. Like at first, just put em on the bottom step and they will usually jump right off. Once the first step is mastered, go up to the second step and so on until you get the top one mastered. Now at first, they both would just turn around and run up the stairs instead of coming down, but we'd just put up a baby gate so they couldnt turn around and go up... finally, one day we were sitting down stairs and here come my little man (from all the way upstairs) prancing through the living room.. He had finally did it.. We'll never let him know that we heard him trying that day... Took him about 10-15 mins.. but he did it... Good luck to you and yours
