Default DONT EAT that POOP - 02-07-2007, 02:27 AM

I have a problem with my dog and eating poop. When i go to school i leave her in her room because i think it is to cruel to leave her in the cage for 8 hours while im at school. So she would poop because i feed her in the morning and then because i guess she would get bored, i leave lots of toys for her, she would eat the poop. I would know this because there would be poop smears on the floor and no poop to be found. And when i took her to the vet they told me she had worms that you could only get from eating poop. When im at home though i pick up after her poop right away.

Could someone please tell me how to solve this problem.

some dogs eat poop because their bored, some do it because they like it. You can try feeding her some canned pumpkin and seeing if that helps deter her away from doing it. If not really the only thing you can do is keep picking up as soon as it happens. She would have had to eaten wormy poop in teh first place to get the worms, so she probably was wormy anyways!! You can buy stuff from the vets that is susposed to help them stop eating poop. sometimes it works, sometimes not. It might be something you have to live with forever.... maybe feed her eariler in the morning and take her out before you leave for school???

Our female boston ate her poop ALL the time when she was a pup. She was kept in a oversized crate, but it was the plastic kind with the holes. Everyday we would come home to discover she had pooped and had eaten it. We talked to the vet about it and she suggested the medicine that you give them that's chemically changes in their digestive system to make their poop less appealing, like it isn't already . So, we quit the medicine and then decided to try a different crate. We purchased the wire, more open kind. The pooping completely stopped. I almost didn't believe it at first, but it did.

However, Chloe still will occasionally be discovered eating her poop outside. We have no idea why, and she doesn't do it all the time. So, maybe there are some dogs that just do it...... We still love her!!!
So, I hope this gives you hope that maybe she'll grow out of it!!

I have also heard that sometimes dogs need smaller spaces to stay in when they are left alone because by nature they are "den" like creatures. Our other dog Duke used to pee when we were gone(we left him out in the house) and so we started closing him up in our bedroom along with Chloe in her crate, and the peeing stopped!!

Look! It's a dancing turd!! Sorry to hear about your problem. Hope it has cleared up by now. I have to ask you something important, though-- What do you do when she wants to lick your face?

You may want to buy some tablets from the pet shop for this. I have used it for 2 days with my pup and it seems to make a bit of a difference. You just give one tablet daily. Also, if you crate during the day and then take him/her outside when you're home, you will eliminate the problem all together. Make sure to pick it up right away when you are home. Deworming is also a good idea, that can be a huge cause of poo eating.
