Default New puppy won't leave older dog alone!

My husband and I got Max about a month ago. He recently got neutered and is doing well. We have a six year old female boxer who gets along well with Max ..... except that Max won't leave Hallie alone. They play tug of war and keep away with their toys which is fine, but Max also loves to bite Hallie's legs and start play fights. Hallie sometimes starts the fights, but most of the time Hallie is just laying there and Max will start attacking her. It's not really hard biting - yet. We have been keeping his leash on and when he starts biting we pull the leash and say "no", but he is very stubborn. We just want them to play and have fun without having to break them up every 5 seconds! Help!

let them be. they need to sort out their positions within youtr home. never meddle with them unless there is a chance they wont stop. dogs have their own rules and are not always visible to our eyes. theirbehavior is normal and if the pup goes to far the female will correct it. this may go with a lot of noise but wont mount to any injury. the more you fuss about it the more unclear their relationship will be and the more fuss they will show. there needs to be a clear dominance between them and that is something they must sort out. when this is settled the peace will return within your home!

I agree with Esther. I just brought home a new puppy to 2 other bostons that are 5 yrs old. My older 2 were brought home on the same day so this was never an issue.

The little guy likes to nip at their feet and basically torment them but we put the puppy with one of the older dogs one at a time to give them each time to get used to eachother but under our watchful eye. They are giving the little one a run for her money but she doesnt back down, which I love. When Buster was scared to death of the new puppy, he would run away but now he has begun to become accustomed to the new kid on the block. My older BTs are very gentle and have been play fighting with the little guy but very carefully and I love them for it. I also am sure to give them a bit extra attention so they know they are still my babies.

I only have the new dog since last Thursday but so far, every day has been an improvement. I came home from work yesterday to I have to say, this was the only issue I had with bringing home a new BT. I was also afraid the older dogs would gang up on her. It seems to be working out. Like Esther said, they need to sort out their positions in your home.

my boxer is 11, and is not too fond of my boston pup either. I guess they will eventually find their niche, OR NOT!! I doubt they will hurt each other.

Ester is right...dogs have to establish their own pecking order. Your older dog is trying to maintain her Alpha while the new pup is trying to become the Alpha. We had an American Bulldog named Chopper...he had a set of strong jaws on him hence the name Chopper. Chopper was not the type of dog who I would have ever imagined to be able to put up with a small nippy dogs...however, when we brought a BT (Kona) who only weighed 3 lbs at the time she managed to jump on his back, bit his ears, cheeks, neck, tail...basically every part of Choppers body she could reach. Bear in mind Chopper was 86lbs and could squash or crunch down on Konas little head in a split second. Chopper basically put her in her place by letting her know what is acceptable and what is not. The only time Chopper got out of hand was when he was given a piece of bone marrow at which time Chopper managed to attack Kona. Something to always keep in mind is to try to keep an eye on dogs when giving them any raw or chewing bones.

Long story short...Kona became Chopper's best buddy and Chopper absolutely adored Kona. They would take turns grooming each other every day and Kona always knew her place in the pecking order. Sadly we had to put Chopper to sleep 3 weeks ago due to kidney failure. Kona was devastated. She lost her best friend ever. I did end up adopting 2 BT pups surrendered by puppy mills 4 days ago and I have my own set of challenges now.

I do hope this helps you in the meantime. Hope everything will work out shortly.

Marisa
