Question Did our breeder lie to us? - 01-22-2008, 07:22 PM

We have a 10 week old BT girl who is 7 lbs. 10 oz. We saw the mother BT (about 13 lbs.) and the dad BT is supposed to be 14 lbs. But our little girl is sooo big for 10 weeks! Did our breeder lie to us?

Since we picked her up, we noticed that 2 of her littermates that the breeder still has left are now being described as 8 weeks old! What do you think? There are other little things that have occured that make us wonder about the breeder's honesty, too. I would love to know if we have ended up with a much larger BT than we intended.

Also, we went for a puppy vet visit today and the vet we saw said regarding my size question, "I don't want to cause controvery, but I had to look at her chart again to make sure she was a full BT. I'm not saying that she isn't, but maybe 98%. I'm just saying that she doesn't have the most 'typical' boston traits." I explained that we have AKC papers and the pedigree chart... but, what does that mean???!!! The vet also said they typically will double the puppy's weight at 16 weeks old and use that to determine the adult weight. That will make her a huge BT!!

If you are positive that the breeder is advertising the same litter at a younger age the it sound slike you have boughten off an unethical breeder. Are you sure she didn't have another litter?? What exactly did your vet mean but not having the typical Boston traits? I hate to say this but you get what you pay for most times. If the breeder isn't breeding for "standard" or "betterment" of the breed then you are going to get a low quality puppy. If that isn't important to you then all power to you, but if you were looking for the best, well a reputable breeder that shows in confirmation is the best. I'm the last one to talk, trust me, I bought Derby off an older couple who had bought 2 puppies at the same time and Derby was just too hyper and too much to handle. She has no papers, and I imagine from a "backyard" breeder. I knew it accepted it but you will hear me praying that she has no problems that simply breeding good quality dogs could avoid. Next time, when we decide that another puppy is the future I will be researching for a good breeder with high ethics. Just remember this is my 2 cents worth, and I'll get off my soapbox now...LOL

Like it has been said, Boston's come in all different sizes. My Derby is about 12 pounds give or take an ounce. The joke is I call her "runt" all the time, saying she has to be a Boston/Chi mix...LOL.. I know a Boston that was 25 #'s. He is a little bigger but muscles galore! I still wouldn't call him "large" by any means. He comes well within the standard and there is no doubt he is all Boston!!

your completely right the only way you can be shure that you have 100% boston is when you buy a puppy with all the pedigree papers. i see and hear people talking about a boston that is 100% but has no papers. then you can't be shure he's all boston. i see that in america there are a lot of so called all boston with noses that are too long or they are too big or have colours that are not alloud in the breed standard. do as derbys mama says if you want to be shure you buy a 100% boston.

Having papers does not necessarily guantee it's a pure bred. I believe you were given AKC papers right, U2gardner? There can be big differences in sizes between bostons, but they are still bostons, my Rocco is a larger one at 27 pounds. I organize a BT meetup and we have some BT's that weigh 30 lbs, and beleive me they are all boston as well. Sure Rocco may not be show dog material for being 2 lbs bigger than the standard allows, but he is all boston. I got a boston for companionship, not to be show dog. I think unfortunately there are unethical breeders out there that are in it to make lots of money and not to better the breed. As the saying goes, buyer beware.
