Hey all,
it's been quite a while since I've posted on here. It's been quite a crazy time here where I am.
Anyways, my husband is in the U.S. military and we've just received that we are moving to Germany next.
I am EXTREMELY excited!!!!
We won't be making the move until fall of 2011, but I like to prepare well ahead of time for things as big as this.
We'll be taking both our dogs- Vegas, our B.T & Cali, the newest member of the family, an American Bulldog.
From what I've heard, Germany is very dog friendly and people even travel on the subways and trains with their dogs. If your dog is well behaved they can also go into a restaurant with you!! (That most definitely won't be my dogs! hahaha)
Anyways, the dogs will be traveling in the cargo/ baggage compartment (as much as I hate the idea of them being down there, we don't really have any other options, I'm just glad they will have each other)
So.....I'm just looking for any suggestions as to how to make the transition as smooth as possible.
Vegas has been on a plane many times, but always as my carry-on.
Have any of you ever traveled so far with a dog?Have any of you prepared for such a huge move with dogs?
I've heard they can suffer from stress as well, so I'd really like to make this as stress free as possible for both us and the dogs.
Any suggestions would be fabulous!!!!!
Thanks!

It's great you're checking on everything so far in advance. Most airlines have restrictions about snub nose dogs riding in cargo due to potential breathing problems. so Vegas may need to ride on board with you.
Will they have to go into quarintine for awhile after arriving in Germany?
I'm not sure about the quarantine yet, as fas as how long they will need to be in for. I'm nervous about that as well.
I do know about the snubbed nose dog rules as fas as cargo goes. But I don't know that will work bc Vegas is a whopping 30lbs and exceeds the weight restriction to be carried on board with me (not that they have ever weighed him all he times we've flown with him), and he also doesn't fit in the pet carry on bag anymore and its the largest one you can carry.
But flying in Sept.in the cargo should be fine. Its mostly the hotter months or cold ones where there is concern.
Is there anyone from Germany on his forum??

I am moving to Australia and was looking for similar information. I know my dogs will have to go in quarantine for 30 days upon arrival (OUCH says my pocketbook!), but I'm more concerned about getting them there. I have a Boston and a Boston/Poodle mix (BossiPoo!) and they both have short noses. I came on this forum to see if anyone has had good luck with putting these dogs in the cargo. I know that certain airlines will restrict the short-nosed breeds on flying during certain months or temperatures, and I think my move will be within those guidlines. My concern is just the trip itself. Please, if anyone has information on BT cargo plane travel, give me the scoop! Thanks in advance!
Hello All,
I am moving to Moscow Russia at the beginning of March. Tebow, my little boston terrier, is 18 lbs and I am praying he is small enough to go onto the airplane with me. I could not bare the thought of something happening to him in cargo. If anyone has previous experience flying with their BT, all the advice would be greatly appriciated!
Thanks
I'm not sure about much as Bella came to us in cargo... unfortunately. But because of this we weren't with her. I believe she came continental. I heard some of the airlines... I think Delta... have been having some problems recently as far as losing dogs. I don't want to scare you I just want you to be aware so you can look into it and make sure you pick the best airline possible for doggy air travel. I hope you figure everything out and keep us posted. Hope you have a blast in Germany!
cnadeanne, where are you moving to in Germany?
I am living in Germany with my BT that my wife and I brought from the states after moving here. I am US military so I had a few advantages to bringing him over. But, there is no quarantine in Germany from the states, you must get all vaccinations done, especially rabies, and a microchip. Any vet should be able to help you with all the neccessary proccedures, but I would reccomend searching for one in your area with experience with this.
As for the flight, Iggy has made 2 trips from the states and here. His first time he was 5 months old and it was quite difficult for him. After crate training he took the second trip very well. He was in the crate for 20 hours on the last flight due to snow delays in Frankfurt. When we finally got him he was happy and seemed comfortable. We got him a waterbottle like hampsters have and I think they fed him once.
When you arrive you will need to get a "Pet passport" from any vet here in Germany. This will summarize all vaccinations and records. It is also very usefull if you choose to take Vegas, Cali and your newest family member to a dog sitter.
Germans LOVE dogs more than anything! There are more places you can take your dog in town here than Germans would take their own kids. Like restaraunts, trains even shopping malls. Pretty much anywhere there is not a sign saying you can't take your dog. One major exception is super markets.
If you have any other questions about dogs in Germany, let me know!
Hi TeBow14,
Move One is a relocation company with a Pet Transportation arm. They could advise you on getting TeBow to Moscow. Here are some links to their Pet Transportation articles.

Bastian & I are also relocating to Germany! Maybe we should start a group.. Bostons in Germany!
We've just started the process of figuring out what we have to do, and the information on this thread is great!
I hope we can stay in contact. That goes for Iggy, too!
Those are some great looking Bostons! ))))
